Narrow Gauge Inventory

Here is the initial inventory with one change. We determined downline that some of the 2 1/2 foot gauge cars could be adjusted to either 2 or 2 1/2 foot gauge.

Subject: The ROF area narrow gage inventory--October 1, 1632
From: Ernest Lutz
Date: Sat, 7 Jun 2003

This is based on information gained during Will and Cheryl's visit to Mannington--the general concept has been discussed and blessed by Eric, i.e. the quantity of track and split between gages, the amount of cars is something I've come with, but I have specific guidance that there are NO locomotives of any sort in the ROF.

Some background information---

1. the Elizabeth stories will need to be rewritten to take account of this new information and there will be no strap rail, as Will indicates there is somewhere in the range of 40-60 miles of narrow gage rail in the ROF based on his recon.

2. The first big issue they will have to deal with is what gage will be used by the TACRAIL unit as there is a mix of 2 and 2 1/2 foot gage track (all 20lb) and a mix of rolling stock for the two gages.

Anyway, here goes:

SUBJECT: Inventory of Narrow Gage Rolling Stock in the ROF Area

  1. 1. Per guidance from CG, NUS Army, 1st Railway Company has performed an inventory of all narrow-gage track and rolling stock in the Ring of Fire.
  2. 2. Results of this inventory are as follows:
    1. A. Track: Total 45 servicable miles of track.
      1. 1) Above ground we found 35 miles of 20lb track. Approximately 20 miles of this track and associated hardware are immediately recyclable. Of the remaining 15 miles most is only good for scrap however some of the hardware and other fittings can be recovered.
      2. 2) In dog hole and other unused mines, we found approximately 25 miles of servicable track and fittings.
    2. B. Rolling Stock: We found 45 pieces of rolling stock, in the 2 and 2 1/2 foot gages.
      1. 1) 2 ft gage. Flatcars - 4, Lumber cars - 6, Coal cars - 16
      2. 2) Convertible to either 2 foot or 2 1/2 foot gage. Flatcars - 2, Boxcars - 1, Coal cars - 7, Hopper cars - 1.
      3. 3) 2 1/2 ft gage. Flatcars - 2, Boxcars - 2, Coal cars - 3, Hopper cars - 1.
    3. C. No Locomotives were found in the ROF.
  3. 3. Recommendation: 2 ft gage equipment should be kept by the Army as the standard gage for tactical railways and all 2 1/2 foot gage equipment should be turned over to the Strategic Resources Board for other projects.
  4. 4. POC is 1LT Pitre, Commander 1st Railway Company, 555-1234.
